Having always had an interest in martial arts, I tried a few different styles from karate to kickboxing but nothing seemed to really "stick". I would get bored and disinterested, then would go and try some other form of fitness whether it was the gym, yoga and even bellydancing! I was looking for something all round - for the mind, body and spirit. After coming along and trying out a class with Si-Hing Peter Caro I knew I wanted to join right away and did! WT is a great way to relax the mind, it gives you a quiet confidence that you can walk down the street and know you can take care of yourself (if the need arises) and at the same time you get a good work out. Blitz Defence is truly the biggest clincher of all - it's what sets WT apart from the other martial art styles. Being able to apply what we learn in class to a real life threatening scenario is so confronting but at the same time absolutely unreal. WT is like a big family. The Instructors, environment and people are awesome. After a year and a half of being a part of the WT organisation I feel I have found something that has finally "stuck"! You don't stop learning and you are certainly challenged in every class. Thank you Sifu and Si-Hing Peter for your patience and excellent teaching skills!
Dimi I was looking around at various martial arts for quite some time, but with no background in the arts, wasn’t sure where to start. I tried a Shaolin Kung Fu class, where I had to join and pay membership fees before even getting through the door. Thinking this was how martial arts schools operated, I complied. Unfortunately the class involved 30mins of general stretching and 30mins of the beginners being shown a couple of forms with no explanation and then virtually being ignored. This put me off, but I wasn’t prepared to give up. I knew what I was seeking but nothing seemed to measure up. I wanted to learn a martial art that involved real self defence rather than a sport that’s competition based. I wanted something that would be practical and effective. Something I, as the weaker sex, could use that works. I was also searching for an internal ‘school’, not just the ‘external’ or physical defence form. Then I literally stumbled onto WT. Wow!! What an insight! After attending the demonstration evening, I was hooked. Not wanting to get carried away, and after my previous experience, I took advantage of the free week to get a better feel and understanding of the school and its members, the art-form itself, and how professional the instructors were. I wasn’t disappointed. I was impressed! The classes are great fun. The environment is ego free, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner or advanced because everyone helps each other. You have the opportunity to train with people of differing shapes, sizes, strengths and abilities which encourages you to be flexible and adapt to diverse situations. Trying to defend myself against someone bigger and stronger was always in the back of my mind. I wanted something that I could employ if needed. With WT, strength and size is not a factor. With their experience and expert tuition, Si-Fu & Si-Hing teach you how to execute techniques correctly and importantly, effectively. There is no pressure during classes and everyone gets equal attention regardless of whether you are there for fun, fitness or are more serious. The opportunity to test your skills is also available through mock real-life scenarios that are created. This complements the form and technique training done through regular classes. After all, if you ever need to utilise your WT skills for self defence, it will be in an everyday situation. Well who’d have thought it could be so much fun? The more you learn in WT the more you want to build upon it and progress! There are many dimensions to WT: physical, mental, and spiritual. Of course, it’s up to you what you get out of it. WT is what I was looking for, and more! I’m still at the beginning of my journey and am enjoying the experiences, successes, failures, learning’s and discoveries along the way. But hey, don’t take my word for it – give WT a go for yourself . . . you won’t be disappointed! G Acres My reason for taking up a Chinese martial art was simple: I’m Chinese, and I should know kung-fu. I studied tae-kwon-do when I was eleven. A pale blue belt with a mini red tip was all I had to show for. One decade and two countries later, the quote, “..there’s a Stefan Fischer in Kensington who teaches wing chun”, changed my life. After reading the Wing Tsun website, I was sold. I sent my details, attended the demo night whereby I met Si Hing (Peter Caro) for the first time, and Sam Theo, who assisted Si Hing that evening. I signed up and I’ve never looked back. WT has presented me with two gifts: the gift of knowledge and the gift of family. I learn the fighting principles behind Wing Tsun, the lessons of non-ego, all-round fitness, physical strength and control, and most importantly, the confidence instilled in me to defend myself without hesitation. In this day and age of senseless violence, especially against women, arming one’s self with the knowledge of WT, is the one invaluable lesson all women should learn. (And there’s no greater satisfaction than to palm-strike a man in his groin, followed up by multiple chain-punches to the head with elbows to the face. Wooh!) I’m only five feet nothing, so I emphasize on technique and structure a lot more. Si-Fu bestows great lessons in training without one’s ego and Si Hing’s patience in his teaching helps me learn with accuracy. If I can do this, anyone can. It takes a few years to learn and a lifetime to master. But what I’ve learnt so far, I try to apply in life and I owe much of this to Si-Fu and Si Hing, without whom, I’d probably end up learning from self-professed wing chun grandmasters. Dor-jeh, Si-Fu! Dor-jeh, Si Hing! Mei |
